How to Install a Threaded Insert into your Wood Furniture

Posted on May 16, 2019May 20, 2022 By sarahosbornewood

Easiest way (using a drill)

  1. Drill a ½” diameter hole where you want the insert to be positioned.
  2. Insert a 5/16 Allen driving tool head on to your drill.
  3. Insert the head of the driving tool inside the hex end of the threaded insert, and position the insert over the hole that you drilled.
  4. Drill the insert down until the top of the insert is just below the surface of the wood.
  5. Reverse the drill to remove the driving tool.
  6. The threaded insert should remain in the wood.

If you don’t have a drill: (using a socket wrench)

  1. Drill a ½” diameter hole where you want the insert to be positioned.
  2. Using a 5/16 hex-head bolt, thread a 5/16” nut onto the insert until the bottom of the nut is about an inch from the bottom of the bolt.
  • Thread the insert completely onto the bolt until the insert is right next to the nut.
  • Place the insert (attached to the bolt) over the hole that you drilled, and start to screw it down finger-tight.
  • Using an Allen or socket wrench to match the size of the hex head, rotate the bolt until the bottom of the nut is level with the surface of the wood.
  • Reverse direction to remove the hex head bolt.
  • Your threaded insert should remain in the wood when the bolt is removed.
